Storable good monopoly: the role of commitment1

چکیده
We study dynamic monopoly pricing of storable goods in an environment where demand changes over time. The literature on durables has focused on incentives to delay purchases. Our analysis focuses on a different intertemporal demand incentive. The key force on the consumer side is advance purchases or stockpiling. In the case of storable goods the stockpiling motive has been documented in recent empirical literature. We show that, in this environment, if the monopolist cannot commit, then prices are higher in all periods, and social welfare is lower, than in the case in which the monopolist can commit. This is in contrast with the analysis in the literature on the Coase conjecture.

Market power in an exhaustible resource market: The case of storable pollution permits
Motivated by the structure of existing pollution permit markets, we study the equilibrium path that results from allocating an initial stock of storable permits to an agent, or a group of agents, in a position to exercise market power. A large seller of permits exercises market power no differently than a large supplier of an exhaustible resource. However, whenever the large agent’s endowment f...
متن کاملThe Impact of Monetary Policy Shock on the Price of Storable Goods: A Case Study of Food
In many economies, commodity price volatility is one of the sources of signaling to market players. Different experiences of price shocks have led economists to reconsider price shocks. Considering the effects of monetary policy on the inflation rate, the present study investigates the impact of monetary policy shock on the price of storable food commodities. In this regard, data for 2006: 01 t...
متن کاملA Framework of Peak Load Pricing with Strategic Firms
Abstract In this article we analyze firms investment incentives in liberalized electricity markets. Since electricity is economically non storable, it is optimal for firms to invest in a differentiated portfolio of technologies in order to serve strongly fluctuating demand. Prior to the Liberalization of electricity markets, for regulated monopolists, optimal investment and pricing strategies h...

We describe the behaviour of a monopolist supplying a vertically di¤erentiated good with network externalities. Assuming a ...xed cost of quality improvements, we show that the presence of network externalities enhances the incentive to expand output associated with scale economies. Although the quality distortion operated by the monopolist increases with network externalities, the output expan...
متن کاملStorable palladacycles for selective functionalization of alkyne-containing proteins.
We report the facile preparation of palladacycles as storable arylpalladium(II) reagents from acetanilides via cyclopalladation. The palladacycles exhibit good stability in PBS buffer and are capable of functionalizing a metabolically encoded HPG-containing protein, thus providing a new type of biocompatible organometallic reagent for selectively functionalizing the alkyne-encoded proteins.
